Wyoming Valley History

We who live in our picturesque Wyoming Valley often miss the chance to appreciate our surroundings. Most of us are probably familiar with pieces of our anthracite mining history, and perhaps more than a few might know about a young Quaker girl captured by Indians, or a battle that took place here during the Revolutionary War.

Did you know that three Pennsylvania governors came from our valley? We can also boast of television, Broadway, and screen celebrities, Nobel Prize winners, nationally known artists and sports figures including Olympians and Hall of Fame baseball players. Inventors, scientists, and architects have also claimed our valley as their heritage. Veterans from here have fought in all of our nation's conflicts.

In fact, people who have roots here in our hometowns represent nearly every field of human endeavor. This website, links, and the accompanying videos are dedicated to helping us become more in tune with the people, places, and moments in time that have influenced us, the nation, and the world.

The stories of people, places, and events of our Wyoming Valley have deep roots, but new information is being continually uncovered. Thus the Scratching the Surface website will be used to incorporate the latest discoveries.
